Oppo will soon join the growing list of smartphone makers copying the notch on the Apple iPhone X. At MWC 2018, Asus embraced the notch with the launch of its Zenfone 5 series.

If rumors are anything to go by then OnePlus 6 will also sport a similar notch when it gets launched sometime later this year. So it is just not surprising that Oppo, the sister brand of OnePlus, is also joining the notch party with the upcoming R15 and R15 Plus smartphones.

Alleged leaked pictures of the Oppo R15 was spotted on Weibo, China’s microblogging service. The image shows thin bezel design seen on other Oppo smartphones, but the major change in design is the notch around the top of the display. The notch seems to be covering the front-facing camera, earpiece and other sensors, and will most likely not include any specialized facing recognition system.

The iPhone X launched last year received mixed response among hard-core Apple fans with some criticizing the $1,000 price, and others calling the notch as obtrusive. However, Apple has a justification for the notch in the form of Face ID, which uses dedicated 3D and depth sensors to securely detect faces. In the case of Android smartphone makers, it seems like they are only copying the notch and not quality technology that Apple has created for facial recognition.

The Weibo listing confirms that Oppo R15 and R15 Plus will first launch in China. There is no word if these devices will make it to India, but the design language may trickle down to company’s F series phones sold here.
